  14. This file is README.1ST.  It contains information about
  15. MOZART and how to install it.
  16.  
  17. You are recommended to read it first!
  18.  
  19. README.TXT:  Other important information including how to
  20. register and uninstall MOZART is given in the file README.TXT
  21. which can be read after installation if you wish. README.TXT
  22. also has useful trouble-shooting information in case MOZART
  23. does not run satisfactorily after installation.

  26. 1. DISTRIBUTION FILES
  27. =====================
  28.  
  29. There are two forms in which you may have got MOZART.
  30.  
  31. A) You got the evaluation version in the form  zip files
  32.    with names like MOZRT11A.ZIP and MOZRT11B.ZIP from a
  33.    bulletin board, via the internet, or from CompuServe.
  34.    You will know how to unzip them with PKUNZIP.EXE and
  35.    you will have found this file.
  36.    
  37.    The zip file names may vary: the two digits in the
  38.    name reflect the version.  Where there is no need to
  39.    keep zip files under 720kB, MOZART may be found in
  40.    one larger zip file:  eg MOZART11.ZIP
  41.    
  42. B) You have a floppy disk containing a number of files,
  43.    some in compressed format (eg MOZART.EX_).  This disk
  44.    includes README.1ST (this file) and an installation
  45.    program SETUP.EXE.
  46.  
  47. Registered versions are distributed in form (B).
  48.  
  49. If you got (A), make sure that the ZIP files are unzipped
  50. into a single directory before installation.
  51.  
  52. IMPORTANT NOTE: The files from (A) must be unzipped into a
  53. (temporary) directory which must NOT be the directory you
  54. are about to install MOZART into.

  57. 2. Installing MOZART
  58. ====================
  59.  
  60. Installation is done by running the program setup.exe supplied
  61. on the distribution disk:
  62.  
  63. If your distribution files (including setup.exe) are on a floppy
  64. disk in drive a:
  65.  
  66.     Go to Windows Program Manager;
  67.  
  68.     click on the "Run..." item on its "File" menu;
  69.  
  70.     in the command box type
  71.  
  72.                     a:\setup
  73.  
  74.     click on Ok or press Enter.
  75.  
  76. ( Otherwise if you have unzipped the zipped files into a temporary
  77.   directory, c:\tmp say, then do the same but with the command
  78.   c:\tmp\setup.)
  79.  
  80. The setup program now installs MOZART for you.
  81.  
  82. It asks at least one question: where do you want MOZART installed?
  83. It suggests a directory, ususlly C:\MOZART.  You may install it
  84. anywhere on your hard disk but it is best to be in a new
  85. directory (or over an old copy of MOZART).  The setup program
  86. creates the directory for you if it doesn't exist.
  87.  
  88. MOZART setup installs a number of utility DLL files which are 
  89. commonly used by many programs.  It puts these in your
  90. WINDOWS directory.  If you already have a newer version
  91. of any of these files than the one supplied with MOZART, the
  92. installation will pause to ask you if you really want to install
  93. an older version. The correct answer is usually "No".  (If you
  94. do want to install older versions, then exit from the setup
  95. program and back up your originals first - MOZART should work
  96. with newer versions; other applications may not work with older
  97. ones.)

  99. The common DLLs installed by MOZART setup are listed under the
  100. heading "Files installed" in the file README.TXT.
  101.  
  102. MOZART SETUP also installs a number of sample tunes in a TUNES
  103. subdirectory of the MOZART directory.  These files are the ones
  104. with names of the form *.MZ in the distribution files.
  105.  
  106. MOZART SETUP tells your Windows Registration Database about .mz
  107. files so that files with this extension can be opened from the
  108. Windows File Manager - just as (for example) .WRI files can be.
  109.  
  110. A number of icons will appear in a group of files titled "Mozart"
  111. in the program manager.  These include MOZART itself, an icon for
  112. direct access to the on-line help, and icons for showing the
  113. main registration form REGISTER.WRI, other registration forms,
  114. and the companion information file README.TXT
  115.  
  116. You are recommended to read the file README.TXT before or after
  117. installation - it contains very useful information.

  120. 3 Installation trouble shooting
  121. ===============================
  122.  
  123. Problem: MOZART will not install, even though there is plenty
  124. of room on the disk.  The installation program indicates that some
  125. file or files cannot be found or created.
  126.  
  127. Diagnosis: You are probably trying to install MOZART into the
  128. same directory containing the installation package.  This will
  129. not work.
  130.  
  131. Cure: Choose a different directory.  See Section 1 above.
